History & Development
Before becoming a modern waterfront neighborhood, much of The Bridge District was home to rice mills, industrial facilities, warehouses, and working riverfront operations connected to West Sacramento’s agricultural and shipping history.
Unlike many Sacramento neighborhoods located below the levee system, much of The Bridge District was redeveloped above the levee line after former rice field and industrial land was raised during redevelopment planning. This created elevated riverfront views, walkable streets, and direct connections to the Sacramento River.
The Mill Street Pier was originally built in the 1950s to support industrial river operations tied to the area’s rice milling history. Today, the restored pier serves as a public waterfront destination and gathering space within The Bridge District.
The pier now hosts community events, waterfront gatherings, and wellness programming including outdoor yoga classes overlooking the Sacramento River and Downtown Sacramento skyline.
